KOMPSAT-3 was developed by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) for the continuation of satellite earth observation after KOMPSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-2.

KOMPSAT-3 was designed to meet the needs of the high-resolution EO (Electro-Optical) images required for GIS (Geographical Information Systems) establishments and applications for environmental, agriculture and ocean monitoring.

The KOMPSAT-3 system allows the acquisition of panchromatic images at a spatial resolution of 0.7 metre and multispectral images of 2.8 metres. With a near polar, sun-synchronous orbit, KOMPSAT-3 is able to support various missions using its agile manoeuvres such as Strip Imaging, Multi Point Imaging, Single Pass Stereo Imaging and Wide Area Imaging.
